UN FIUME

Il fiume Volturno nasce dai Monti delle Mainarde nel comune di Rocchetta a Volturno, la parte più meridionale dell’Appennino Centrale nonchè uno dei cinque comuni molisani del Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise e presso Castel San Vincenzo riceve le acque provenienti dalla sorgente Capo Volturno (a circa 500 mt s.l.m.). Il Volturno è il principale fiume del Mezzogiorno d’Italia sia per lunghezza sia per portata. Nel VII secolo venne fondata in prossimità delle sorgenti, sulla riva sinistra del fiume, l’importante Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Volturno che diventerà presto un fiorente complesso monastico.

The Volturno river begins in the Mainarde mountain range, in the town of Rocchetta al Volturno, the most southern-facing part of the Central Appennines. It is one of the five towns that together make up the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise. It receives water from the source of Capo Volturno river (approx. 500 mt above sea level). The Volturno river is the most important river in southern Italy for both length and river flow. During the 7th century, the important Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno was founded to the left of the river bank and is now a thriving monastery.
